The Process
How It Works
Five simple steps from ordering to results — pay securely online, collect a blood spot or freshly plucked feathers at home, and mail your sample in a standard envelope.
Step 01
Choose Your Test & Place an Order
Browse our available tests — DNA Sex Testing (for all birds except ratites), Blue Egg Gene, Recessive White Gene, and Ratite DNA Sex Testing (emu, rhea, and ostrich) — and select the one that fits your birds and breeding goals. Log in to your account and confirm your order. You'll be taken directly to our secure online checkout to pay by credit or debit card.
Step 02
Complete Secure Online Checkout
After confirming your order details, you'll be redirected to our secure GoDaddy-powered checkout page. Pay by credit or debit card — the whole process takes under a minute. You'll receive an order confirmation email as soon as payment is complete.
Step 03
Collect Your Sample at Home
We accept two sample types — choose whichever is easier for you. For a blood sample: use a clean nail clipper to clip one toenail just slightly past the quick, blot the blood onto a small triangle of coffee filter paper, and let it air-dry for at least 30 minutes before placing into an envelope or bag. For a feather sample: pluck 3–5 chest feathers directly from the bird, hold feathers by the tip (not the quill end), and place them in a small paper envelope or zipper bag.
Step 04
Mail Your Sample
Place the sample inside a ziploc or paper coin envelope and seal it, then place all samples inside a regular envelope or mailer. Mail it to our lab address using standard Canada Post lettermail — no special packaging or courier required.
Step 05
Receive Your Results
Once your sample arrives at the lab, we process it within 24–48 hours. Your result is emailed to you and saved permanently to your account portal. The report includes your bird's genotype, a plain-language explanation of what it means, and any relevant notes for your breeding program.
Supplies
Everything You Need
No kit to buy, no courier to book. Everything on this list is probably already in your home.
Nail clipper (blood samples)
Any standard nail clipper — human or pet. Clean it with rubbing alcohol first.
Coffee filter paper (blood samples)
Plain white basket-style coffee filters work perfectly. Paper towel or printer paper are also fine. Cut into small triangles.
Small Ziploc bag or paper coin envelope
A standard snack-size Ziploc bag or small paper envelope. One per bird, for either sample type.
Pen or marker
To label each bag with your bird's name and sample ID number.
Envelope or small mailer
Standard lettermail envelope is fine for most samples.
